Les Abattoirs | Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain à Toulouse, France
On view March 8th, 2018 through May 19th, 2018
Performance and opening Thursday, March 8th from 6:30 pm.
This exhibition, conceived from the collection of artists’ books from the Médiathèque, has a double ambition: to insist on the essential place of the Médiathèque has a double ambition: to insist on the essential place of the document in the contemporary art and the book of the artist.
If traditionally, work and document are opposed, the book of artists will reject this opposition to better play on the hybrid and ambivalent status of this documentation: the documentation of art and documentation as art, or both at once.
The exhibition evokes the different strategies put in place by artists to infiltrate the real world and extend their investigations into other disciplinary fields, more or less foreign to art. It is from these breakaways out of the system of the fine arts that the artists will have to incarnate themselves in different avatars, that for simplification, one will summarize by this now familiar figure “of the artist in …”: researcher, worker, trade unionist, collector, investigator, manipulator …
